Population Services International (PSI/Nigeria) has held a two-day training in Sokoto to strengthen media advocacy on menstrual hygiene management, especially for adolescent girls.
The training brought together media practitioners from various platforms to build their capacity on how to raise public awareness and reduce stigma around menstruation.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Yusuf Ibrahim, Director of Child Development at the Sokoto State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving menstrual hygiene across the state. He called on the media to support these efforts by educating the public.
Also present was Hajiya Hadiza Abubakar Tafida, the ministry’s Focal Person on Menstrual Health, who praised the media for its role in health promotion and encouraged them to give more attention to menstrual health issues.
Khairat Maiwada, PSI’s State Support Officer for the MHNOW project in Sokoto, said the training aimed to empower journalists with the right knowledge to drive positive change. She noted that ending stigma and supporting young girls during menstruation requires both awareness and action.
The training covered key topics such as understanding adolescents and menstruation, menstrual products, and safe disposal methods. These sessions were led by MH facilitator, Nafiu Magori.
